    In affirmative clauses we usually prefer a long way.<\/b><\/p>\n

    • We walked a long way.<\/b> (NOT — walked far.)<\/li>\n
    • The station is a long way <\/b>from here. (More natural than The station is far from here.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Far<\/b> is normal in affirmative clauses with too, enough, as<\/b> and so.<\/b><\/p>\n

      • \u2018Have I gone far enough?\u2019<\/b> \u2018A bit too far.\u2019<\/li>\n
      • \u2018Any problems?\u2019 \u2018OK so far.<\/b>\u2019<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Far<\/b> is also used in all kinds of clauses to modify comparatives, superlatives and too.<\/p>\n

        • She is far older <\/b>than her husband.<\/li>\n
        • This is by far the best <\/b>book I have read.<\/li>\n
        • You are far too young <\/b>to get married.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Farther vs. Further<\/h3>\n

          We use both farther and further to talk about distance. There is no difference of meaning.<\/p>\n

          • Tokyo is farther\/further <\/b>away than Beijing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            We can use further <\/b>(but not farther) to mean additional<\/i>, extra<\/i>.<\/p>\n
