(= She <b>has <\/b>a new boyfriend.)<\/li>\n<li>My mother <b>has got<\/b> two sisters. (= My mother <b>has<\/b> two sisters.)<\/li>\n<li>They <b>have got <\/b>a car. (= They <b>have <\/b>a car.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Differences<\/h3>\n<p>In questions and negatives, we do <b>not<\/b> normally use <b>have<\/b> without <b>got<\/b>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Has <\/b>your sister <b>got <\/b>a car? (More natural than Has your sister a car.)<\/li>\n<li>I <b>haven\u2019t got <\/b>your keys. (More natural than I haven\u2019t your keys.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note that it is also possible to use <b>do-forms<\/b> of have instead of <b>got-forms<\/b>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Does <\/b>your sister <b>have<\/b> a car? (= <b>Has <\/b>your sister <b>got <\/b>a car?)<\/li>\n<li>I <b>don&#8217;t have <\/b>your keys. (= I <b>haven\u2019t got <\/b>your keys.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Cases where have got is not used<\/h3>\n<p><b>Have got <\/b>is not used in short answers or tags.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Have <\/b>you <b>got <\/b>a headache? Yes, I have. (NOT Yes, I have got.)<\/li>\n<li>She <b>has got <\/b>a new car, hasn\u2019t she? (NOT &#8212; hasn\u2019t she got?)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Got-forms of have <\/b>are less common in the past tense.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I <b>had <\/b>flu last week. (NOT I had got flu last week.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>British-American differences<\/h3>\n<p>In British English, <b>have <\/b>without <b>got <\/b>is possible in short questions and negatives, though these are often formal.<\/p>\n<p>Compare:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Have <\/b>you a car?
