We do not normally use <b>having<\/b> to express ideas such as possession. When <b>have<\/b> means <b>own<\/b>, it is always used in the base form. <b>Having<\/b> is not possible in this case.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I <b>have<\/b> a car. (BUT NOT I am having a car.)<\/li>\n<li>He <b>has<\/b> a daughter. (BUT NOT He is having a daughter.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Have<\/b> is also used to talk about medical conditions that we experience.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I <b>have <\/b>a cold \/ a headache \/ a sore throat. (NOT I am having a cold \/ a headache.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, the form having can be used to talk about certain medical conditions that last for only a few seconds or minutes. For example, we can say:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I am <b>having<\/b> a heart attack.<\/li>\n<li>He thought that he was <b>having<\/b> a stroke.<\/li>\n<li>He was <b>having<\/b> an epileptic fit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When we talk about eating, the continuous form <b>having<\/b> is possible.<\/p>\n<p>They were <b>having <\/b>dinner when I arrived. (Here we are talking about an activity that was in progress when another action occurred.)<\/p>\n<p>Compare:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I <b>have <\/b>breakfast at 8 am. (Routine)<\/li>\n<li>I am <b>having<\/b> breakfast.
