The conjunctions if<\/b> and unless<\/b> introduce a condition – something which must happen first so that something else can happen. Unless<\/b> means if not<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Read the following sentences.<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Work hard. Otherwise you will not pass.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    These two sentences can be combined into one using if<\/b> or unless<\/b>.<\/p>\n

      \n
    • If<\/b> you work hard, you will pass. OR If<\/b> you do not work hard, you will not pass.<\/li>\n
    • Unless<\/b> you work hard, you will not <\/b>pass.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
        \n
      • He must carry out my orders. Otherwise he will be sacked.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        We can combine these two sentences using if<\/b> or unless<\/b>.<\/p>\n

        • If <\/b>he does not carry out my orders, he will be sacked.<\/li>\n
        • Unless<\/b> he carries out my orders, he will be sacked. (NOT Unless he does not carry out my orders, he will be sacked.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          We have already learned that unless<\/b> means if not<\/b> and hence it is wrong to use another not<\/b> in clauses introduced by unless<\/b>.<\/p>\n

          Combine the following sentences using if or unless.<\/p>\n

          1. You must read the passage carefully. Otherwise you will not understand it.<\/p>\n

          2. She must buy a ticket. Otherwise she will not be allowed to watch the program.<\/p>\n

          3. He must stop smoking. Otherwise he will get cancer.<\/p>\n

          4. You must learn English. Otherwise you will not get a good job.<\/p>\n

          3. If <\/b>he does not stop smoking, he will get cancer. \/ Unless<\/b> he stops smoking, he will get cancer.<\/p>\n
