Look<\/b> can mean seem<\/i> or appear<\/i>. In this case it is a copular verb and can be followed by adjectives.<\/p>\n

  • You look unhappy <\/b>– what is the matter? (NOT You look unhappily.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    We can use a few noun phrases after look <\/b>in the same way as adjectives.<\/p>\n

      \n
    • When she realized what she had done she looked a real fool. <\/b><\/li>\n
    • The room looks a mess. <\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Look <\/b>can be followed by like <\/b>or as if<\/b>. Progressive forms are not usually used in this case.<\/p>\n

      • It looks like <\/b>it is going to rain. (NOT It is looking like —)<\/li>\n
      • She looks like <\/b>her mother. (NOT She is looking like —)<\/li>\n
      • She looks as if <\/b>she is dreaming.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Look as an ordinary verb<\/h3>\n

        When look<\/b> means turn one\u2019s eyes towards<\/i>, it is used with adverbs, not adjectives.<\/p>\n

        • Look carefully. <\/b> (NOT — careful.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Before an object, a preposition is necessary (usually at<\/b>). A preposition is not used when there is no object.<\/p>\n

          • Look at him. <\/b> (NOT Look him.)<\/li>\n
          • They were looking at some books. <\/b><\/li>\n
          • Look carefully <\/b>– it\u2019s changing colour. (NOT Look at carefully —)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            Look after and look for<\/h3>\n

            Look after<\/b> means take care of<\/i>; look for<\/b> means try to find<\/i>.<\/p>\n
