In this case it is a copular verb and can be followed by adjectives.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You <b>look unhappy <\/b>&#8211; what is the matter? (NOT You look unhappily.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We can use a few noun phrases after <b>look <\/b>in the same way as adjectives.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When she realized what she had done she <b>looked a real fool. <\/b><\/li>\n<li>The room <b>looks a mess. <\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Look <\/b>can be followed by <b>like <\/b>or <b>as if<\/b>. Progressive forms are not usually used in this case.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It <b>looks like <\/b>it is going to rain. (NOT It is looking like &#8212;)<\/li>\n<li>She <b>looks like <\/b>her mother. (NOT She is looking like &#8212;)<\/li>\n<li>She <b>looks as if <\/b>she is dreaming.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Look as an ordinary verb<\/h3>\n<p>When <b>look<\/b> means <i>turn one\u2019s eyes towards<\/i>, it is used with adverbs, not adjectives.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Look <b>carefully. <\/b> (NOT &#8212; careful.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Before an object, a preposition is necessary (usually <b>at<\/b>). A preposition is not used when there is no object.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Look at him. <\/b> (NOT Look him.)<\/li>\n<li>They were <b>looking at some books. <\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Look carefully <\/b>&#8211; it\u2019s changing colour. (NOT Look at carefully &#8212;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Look after and look for<\/h3>\n<p><b>Look after<\/b> means <i>take care of<\/i>; <b>look for<\/b> means <i>try to find<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Compare:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Could you <b>look after <\/b>the kids while I go shopping?<\/li>\n<li>She spent months<b> looking for<\/b> her lost dog.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Look can mean seem or appear.
