But <b>none of them <\/b>came.<\/li>\n<li><b>None of the keys <\/b>would open the door.<\/li>\n<li><b>None of my friends <\/b>remembered my birthday.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When we use <b>none of <\/b>with a plural noun or pronoun, the verb can be singular or plural.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>None of them has <\/b>come yet. (more formal)<\/li>\n<li><b>None of them have <\/b>come yet. (more informal)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>None <\/b>can be used alone, without a noun, if the meaning is clear.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is there any beer in the house? No, there is <b>none. <\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note that we use <b>neither of<\/b>, not <b>none of<\/b>, to talk about two people or things.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Neither of my parents<\/b> lives with me. (NOT None of my parents &#8212;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>No\/none and not a\/any<\/h3>\n<p><b>No<\/b> can be used instead of <b>not a<\/b> or<b> not any<\/b> when we want to emphasise a negative idea.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sorry, I can\u2019t stop. I have got <b>no time.<\/b> (More emphatic than &#8212; I haven\u2019t got any time.)<\/li>\n<li>He is <b>no fool. <\/b>(More emphatic than He is not a fool.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b> None of<\/b> can be used instead of<b> not any of.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>She has done <b>none of the work <\/b>I told her to do. (More emphatic than She hasn\u2019t done any of the work &#8212;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After<b> no<\/b>, countable nouns are usually plural.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He has got <b>no children.<\/b> (More natural than He has got no child.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But note that we use a singular noun when the sense makes it necessary.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He has got <b>no wife<\/b>.
