Here are some standard expressions you can use while asking for directions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Speaking tip<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Start by saying \u2018Excuse me\u2019. This is a standard expression English speakers use before interrupting or disturbing somebody. If you don\u2019t say \u2018Excuse me\u2019 people might think that you are rude.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Excuse me. Do you know where the nearest post office \/ railway station \/ bookstore \/ library \/ gas station is?<\/li>\n<li>Excuse me. Do you know how to get to the nearest shopping mall?<\/li>\n<li>Excuse me. Could you tell me where the post office is?<\/li>\n<li>Excuse me. I was looking for the post office. Do you know where it is?<\/li>\n<li>Excuse me. Could you give me directions to the railway station?<\/li>\n<li>Excuse me. Is the railway station far from here?<\/li>\n<li>Excuse me. How do I get to the Citi Bank? Is it far from here?<\/li>\n<li>Excuse me. What is the best way to get to Mumbai?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Giving directions<\/h3>\n<p>When somebody gives you direction, you will hear them using expressions like \u2018take a left\u2019, \u2018take a right\u2019, \u2018go straight\u2019 etc. When somebody asks you to take a left, they are asking you to take a left turn.<\/p>\n<p>Sample pieces of conversation are given below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conversation 1<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: Excuse me. I am looking for the gas station. Do you know where it is?<\/p>\n<p>B: It is not far from here. Take a left at the next light. It is on the right.<\/p>\n<p>A: Thank you.<\/p>\n<p>B: You are welcome.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conversation 2<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: Excuse me. Where is the nearest movie theatre?<\/p>\n<p>B: When you get to the MG Street, take a right. Then keep going for about 200 metres. It is on your left.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conversation 3<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: Excuse me. Where is the post office?<\/p>\n<p>B: Take a right when you come to a stop sign.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conversation 4<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: Excuse me. Where is the gas station?<\/p>\n<p>B: It is just around the corner. Turn right after you pass Bank of America.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conversation 5<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: Excuse me. Is there a shopping mall here?<\/p>\n<p>B: Yes, there is one just around the corner. \/ Yes, there is one on the corner.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conversation 6<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: Excuse me. I was looking for the Bank of America. Could you tell me where it is?<\/p>\n<p>B: It is not far from here. Take a right at the traffic lights and go straight on. It is on the left.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conversation 7<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: Excuse me. Where is the post office?<\/p>\n<p>B: Go straight ahead. It is on the left.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Grammar notes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Far is used in questions and negatives. A long way is used in affirmative clauses.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2018Is the station far from here?\u2019 \u2018No, it is not far from here.
