It is also a way of showing respect and being polite.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is a\u00a0<b>Mr Hawkins\u00a0<\/b>on the phone.<\/li>\n<li>Can I speak to\u00a0<b>Ms Sullivan,\u00a0<\/b>please?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Surname only<\/h5>\n<p>People use just the surname to talk about public figures like politicians, actors, writers etc.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have you read the novels of\u00a0<b>Hemingway?<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Talking to people<\/h4>\n<p>In an informal style, we call people by their first names.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hi,\u00a0<b>Ann,\u00a0<\/b>how are you?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In a formal style you can use<b>\u00a0title + surname.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Good morning,\u00a0<b>Miss Sanders.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note that we do not usually use both the first name and the surname of a person that we are talking to. It would be unusual to say \u2018Hello, John Matthews\u2019, for example.<\/p>\n<p><b>Notes<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>1.\u00a0<\/b>Titles are not generally used alone.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Excuse me, could you move a bit? (NOT Excuse me, Mr or Excuse me, Ms)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>2.\u00a0<\/b>Doctor is an exception to this rule.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Doctor,\u00a0<\/b>I have got a bad headache.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>3.\u00a0<\/b>Employees often call their male employers\u00a0<b>Sir<\/b>\u00a0and female employers\u00a0<b>Madam.<\/b>\u00a0Students may also call their teachers Sir or Miss. In other situations British people do not normally use Sir or Madam when they talk to people. In American English, it is quite common to use Sir and Madam when addressing people.<\/p>\n<p><b>4.\u00a0<\/b>Mrs is used to address a married woman and Miss to address an unmarried woman.
