(He didn\u2019t kill anybody.)<\/li>\n<li>You\u00a0<b>should have written<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 I was getting worried. (The person did not write.)<\/li>\n<li>She\u00a0<b>needn\u2019t have invited\u00a0<\/b>them. (She invited them.)<\/li>\n<li>You were stupid to try climbing up there. You\u00a0<b>might have killed\u00a0<\/b>yourself. (The person didn\u2019t kill himself.)<\/li>\n<li>If she hadn\u2019t been so bad-tempered, I\u00a0<b>might have married\u00a0<\/b>her. (I didn\u2019t marry her.)<\/li>\n<li>I\u00a0<b>ought to have phoned\u00a0<\/b>him this morning, but I forgot.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Grammar notes<\/h3>\n<p>The structure\u00a0<b>modal verb + perfect infinitive\u00a0<\/b>does not always refer to an unreal situation.
