That means we can put an object between the two parts of the phrasal verb. Note that the two parts of a separable phrasal verb must be separated when the object is a pronoun.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a list of common separable phrasal verbs.<\/p>\n<p><b>Blow up<\/b>\u00a0= explode<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The terrorists blew up the bridge.<\/li>\n<li>They blew it up. (NOT They blew up it.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Bring up<\/b>\u00a0= mention a topic<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Why do you always have to bring up this topic?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Bring up<\/b>\u00a0= raise children<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My grandparents brought me up. (NOT My grandparents brought up me.)<\/li>\n<li>She has to bring up three small children.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Call off\u00a0<\/b>= cancel<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They called off the meeting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Do over<\/b><\/p>\n<p>To do a job over is to repeat it.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The teacher asked the boy to do the sum over.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Fill out<\/b>\u00a0= complete a form<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fill out this form and send it in.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Fill up<\/b>\u00a0= fill to capacity<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>She filled up the can with water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Find out<\/b>\u00a0= discover<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>She was devastated when she found out that her husband had been cheating on her.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Give away<\/b><\/p>\n<p>To give something away is to give it to someone else for free.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The textile shop was giving away free clothes to attract customers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Give back<\/b>\u00a0= return an object<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When are you going to give me my camera back?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Hand in\u00a0<\/b>= submit an assignment etc.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The students have handed in their papers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Hang up<\/b>\u00a0= put something on hook or receiver<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Before I could say anything she hung up the phone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Hold up<\/b><\/p>\n<p>To hold something up is to delay it.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We don\u2019t want to hold up the payment, but unfortunately there is no other way.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hold up can also mean \u2018rob\u2019.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gunmen held up the State Bank this afternoon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Leave out\u00a0<\/b>= omit<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The relative pronoun can be left out in a few cases.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Look over<\/b>\u00a0= examine, check<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The examiner looked over the answer sheets carefully.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Look up<\/b>\u00a0= search in a dictionary<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you find unfamiliar words, look them up in a dictionary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Make up\u00a0<\/b>= invent a story or lie<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When asked why he was late, the boy made up a story about getting stuck in the traffic jam.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Make out\u00a0<\/b>= hear properly, understand<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I couldn\u2019t make out anything that she said.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Pick out<\/b>\u00a0= choose<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pick out the correct answer from the options given below.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Pick up<\/b>\u00a0= lift<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>She picked the baby up.<\/li>\n<li>I picked her up.<\/li>\n<li>They used a crane to pick up the van.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Point out<\/b><\/p>\n<p>To point something out is to call attention to it.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Can you point out the spelling mistakes in this essay?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Put away<\/b><\/p>\n<p>To put something away is to save or store it for future use.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>She put the chocolate boxes away.<\/li>\n<li>You must put away some money for your retirement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Put off<\/b>\u00a0= postpone<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They have decided to put off the meeting until tomorrow.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Put on<\/b>\u00a0= wear clothes<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He put on a sweater.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Put out\u00a0<\/b>= extinguish<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The firemen put out the fire before it could spread.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Read over<\/b>\u00a0= read again, study, peruse<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I read over the document, but I couldn\u2019t understand anything.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Set up<\/b>\u00a0= arrange<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I absolutely love the way you have set up your living room.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Take down<\/b>\u00a0= make a written note<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Take down what I say.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Take off<\/b>\u00a0= remove clothing<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He took off his shoes and went to bed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Talk over<\/b>\u00a0= discuss<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This is a serious problem.
