(More natural than A hole is in my shoes.)<\/li>\n<li><b>There is\u00a0<\/b>a bridge over the river.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>There are<\/b>\u00a0is used with plural subjects.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>There are\u00a0<\/b>two people in the room. (More natural than Two people are in the room.)<\/li>\n<li>Once upon a time\u00a0<b>there were\u00a0<\/b>three wicked brothers.<\/li>\n<li><b>There have been\u00a0<\/b>many such rumours.<\/li>\n<li><b>There must be\u00a0<\/b>a reason for it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Introductory\u00a0<b>there\u00a0<\/b>can also be used with some intransitive verbs, or with an\u00a0<b>intransitive verb + to be.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>There seems\u00a0<\/b>to be some misunderstanding between them.<\/li>\n<li><b>There happened\u00a0<\/b>to be no one nearby to help her.<\/li>\n<li><b>There fell\u00a0<\/b>a deep silence upon them.<\/li>\n<li><b>There grew\u00a0<\/b>a warm friendship between the two.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Definite subjects<\/h3>\n<p><b>There<\/b>\u00a0is not normally used in a sentence with a definite subject (e.g. a noun with a definite article, or a proper name)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The door was open. (NOT There was the door open.)<\/li>\n<li>Peter was at the party.
