It has no progressive, perfect, infinitive or \u2013ing forms either. To talk about present habits and states, we usually use the simple present tense.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He\u00a0<b>smokes.\u00a0<\/b>(NOT He uses to smoke.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Cases where used to \u2026 is not used<\/h3>\n<p><b>Used to<\/b>\u00a0indicates a constant or frequent practice in the past, or the existence of something in the past. There is an idea that circumstances have changed. It is not used simply to say what happened at a past time, or how long it took, or how many times it happened.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u00a0<b>went\u00a0<\/b>to Canada five times last year. (NOT I used to go to Canada five times last year.)<\/li>\n<li>I\u00a0<b>lived\u00a0<\/b>in Chennai for five years. (NOT I used to live in Chennai for five years.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Be used to<\/h3>\n<p>If a person\u00a0<i>is used to\u00a0<\/i>something, he or she has experienced it before that it is no longer strange or new.\u00a0<b>Be used to\u00a0<\/b>can be followed by nouns or\u00a0<b>\u2013ing\u00a0<\/b>forms (NOT infinitives).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I am\u00a0<b>used to waiting\u00a0<\/b>for buses.<\/li>\n<li>I am\u00a0<b>not used to living\u00a0<\/b>in the city.<\/li>\n<li>I have lived in the city for five years now, so I\u00a0<b>am used to the noise.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Get used to \u2026 ing<\/h3>\n<p><b>Get, become\u00a0<\/b>and<b>\u00a0grow\u00a0<\/b>can also be used before\u00a0<b>used to (\u2026ing).<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Little by little, she\u00a0<b>became used to\u00a0<\/b>her new family.<\/li>\n<li>You will soon\u00a0<b>get used to living\u00a0<\/b>in the country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Test your understanding of these rules with this\u00a0would or used to\u00a0grammar exercise.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Used to We use\u00a0used + infinitive\u00a0to talk about past habits.
