(NOT I am wishing \u2026)<\/li>\n<li>If you<b>\u00a0wish to fix\u00a0<\/b>an appointment, please telephone after six o\u2019 clock.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An\u00a0<b>object + infinitive\u00a0<\/b>structure is also possible.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The accused said that they did not<b>\u00a0wish their photos to appear<\/b>\u00a0in the papers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note that\u00a0<b>wish + object<\/b>\u00a0is not normally possible without a following infinitive.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u00a0<b>want\/would like<\/b>\u00a0an appointment with the manager. (NOT I wish an appointment \u2026)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Wish + that clause<\/h3>\n<p><b>Wish<\/b>\u00a0can be followed by a\u00a0<b>that-clause<\/b>\u00a0(that can be dropped in an informal style). In this case,\u00a0<b>wish<\/b>\u00a0does not mean \u2018want\u2019 \u2013 it expresses regret that things aren\u2019t different, and refers to situations that are unreal, impossible or unlikely.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u00a0<b>wish (that)\u00a0<\/b>I was better-looking.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t you ever\u00a0<b>wish that\u00a0<\/b>you could fly?<\/li>\n<li>I\u00a0<b>wish\u00a0<\/b>I earned more money.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Wish + that-clause<\/b>\u00a0is not generally used for wishes about things that seem possible in the future. We often use\u00a0<b>hope\u00a0<\/b>in this sense.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u00a0<b>hope\u00a0<\/b>you feel better tomorrow. (NOT I wish you felt better tomorrow.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In a\u00a0<b>that-clause<\/b>\u00a0after\u00a0<b>wish<\/b>, past tenses are used with a present or future meaning.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u00a0<b>wish\u00a0<\/b>(that) I\u00a0<b>spoke\u00a0<\/b>French. (= It would be nice if I spoke French.)<\/li>\n<li>I<b>\u00a0wish<\/b>\u00a0I\u00a0<b>could\u00a0<\/b>fly. (NOT I wish I can fly.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Past perfect tenses are used for wishes about the past.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u00a0<b>wish<\/b>\u00a0you\u00a0<b>hadn\u2019t said\u00a0<\/b>that.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>I wish you \u2026<\/h3>\n<p><b>Wish\u00a0<\/b>is used with two objects in some fixed expressions of good wishes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u00a0<b>wish\u00a0<\/b>you a speedy recovery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Progressive forms are possible.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Here\u2019s\u00a0<b>wishing<\/b>\u00a0you all the best in your new job.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We can use\u00a0wish + infinitive\u00a0to mean\u00a0want.
