For example, in \u2018She is a beautiful girl\u2019, the adjective beautiful describes the noun girl.<\/p>\n<p><ins id=\"aswift_0_expand\"><ins id=\"aswift_0_anchor\"><\/ins><\/ins><b>2. Adverb<\/b><\/p>\n<p>An\u00a0adverb\u00a0is a word used to say something about a verb. Examples are: kindly, gently, softly, carefully, hastily, rightly etc. An adverb usually refers to the manner, time or place of an action. An adverb can also be used to describe an adjective or another adverb.<\/p>\n<p><b>3. Articles<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Articles\u00a0are the little words a, an and the. They are used with nouns.<\/p>\n<p>I read a story.<br \/>\nThis is a cat.<br \/>\nShe is an engineer.<br \/>\nLook at the sky.<\/p>\n<p><b>4. Clause<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0clause\u00a0is a group of words which has a subject and predicate of its own and which makes complete sense.<\/p>\n<p><b>5. Conjunction<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0conjunction\u00a0is a joining word. Examples are: and, but, or, because, however, after, when, before etc. It can join two words, phrases or sentences.<\/p>\n<p>Bread and butter<br \/>\nThe boy and the girl<br \/>\nMy brother likes cricket but I like football.<br \/>\nYou can have tea or coffee.<\/p>\n<p><b>6. Noun<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0noun\u00a0is the name of a person, place, animal or thing. Examples are: flower, Susie, India, dog, tree, boys, garden, bird etc.<\/p>\n<p><b>7. Plural<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A noun is said to be\u00a0plural\u00a0or in the plural form if it refers to more than one person, place, animal or thing. Examples are: birds, animals, flowers, boys, books, pens etc.<\/p>\n<p><b>8. Possessive<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0possessive form of a noun\u00a0is one which indicates possession. For example, in \u2018Peter\u2019s house\u2019, Peter\u2019s is in the possessive form. The possessive form of a noun is formed by putting a raised comma (\u2019) at the end of the noun and adding the letter s.<\/p>\n<p>Pronouns, too, have possessive forms. Examples are: my, our, his, her, your, their and its.<\/p>\n<p><b>9. Preposition<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0preposition\u00a0shows the relation between two words in a\u00a0sentence. For example, in the sentence \u2018The ball is in the basket\u2019, the preposition \u2018in\u2019 shows the relation between the words basket and ball.<\/p>\n<p><b>10. Pronoun<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A pronoun usually stands for, or replaces a noun. The\u00a0pronouns\u00a0he, she, it and they are of this type. Some pronouns do not replace or stand for any noun. The pronoun I stands for the speaker and the pronoun you stands for the person spoken to.<\/p>\n<p><b>11. Proper noun<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0proper noun\u00a0is the special name of a person (John, Mary), a country (India, France, Mumbai), a place (library, church), a river (the Nile), an ocean (the Pacific Ocean), a mountain (Mount Everest), a day (Monday), a month (January) etc. A proper noun always begins with a capital letter.<\/p>\n<p><b>12. Phrase<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0phrase\u00a0is a group of words which makes sense, but not complete sense. Examples are: in the corner, with care and his house.<\/p>\n<p><b>13. Sentence<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A sentence is a group of words which makes complete sense. A sentence has a subject and a\u00a0predicate\u00a0of its own. In writing, a sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a full stop, a question mark or an exclamation mark.<\/p>\n<p>Examples are:<\/p>\n<p>Sun rises in the east.<br \/>\nShe is my friend.<br \/>\nWho is she?<br \/>\nHow beautiful!<\/p>\n<p><b>14. Singular<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A noun is said to be\u00a0singular\u00a0or in the singular form if it refers to one person, place, animal or thing. For example, the nouns boy, school, pen and cow are in the singular form.<\/p>\n<p><b>15. Verb<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A verb is an action word. It indicates an action.
