Quantifiers like\u00a0<b>all, some, both<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>half<\/b>\u00a0are called Group B determiners. A Group A determiner cannot be used directly before a Group B determiner.<\/p>\n<p>If we have to put a group B determiner before a group A determiner, we have to use\u00a0<b>of<\/b>. Note that\u00a0<b>of\u00a0<\/b>can be left out after\u00a0<b>all,\u00a0both\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0<b>half<\/b>\u00a0when they are followed by nouns.<\/p>\n<p>Incorrect: The woman held the baby in\u00a0<b>the both hands.<\/b><br \/>\nCorrect: The woman held the baby in\u00a0<b>both hands<\/b>.<br \/>\nCorrect: The woman held the baby in\u00a0<b>both her hands<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>We do not use\u00a0<b>the\u00a0<\/b>before\u00a0<b>both<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Incorrect: They have\u00a0<b>no any\u00a0<\/b>children.<br \/>\nCorrect: They have\u00a0<b>no children<\/b>.<br \/>\nCorrect: They\u00a0<b>don\u2019t<\/b>\u00a0have\u00a0<b>any children<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Avoid the use of\u00a0<b>double negatives<\/b>. Note that when<b>\u00a0have\u00a0<\/b>is the main verb in a sentence, questions and negatives are made with\u00a0<b>do.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Incorrect: Shakespeare is greater than\u00a0<b>any other poets<\/b>.<br \/>\nCorrect: Shakespeare is greater than\u00a0<b>any other poet<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Incorrect: Gold is more precious than\u00a0<b>any other metals<\/b>.<br \/>\nCorrect: Gold is more precious than<b>\u00a0any other metal<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Incorrect: Alice is taller than\u00a0<b>any other girls<\/b>\u00a0in the class.<br \/>\nCorrect: Alice is taller than\u00a0<b>any other girl\u00a0<\/b>in the class.<\/p>\n<p>Note that in this structure a singular noun should be used after\u00a0<b>any other<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Incorrect: Open your book at\u00a0<b>six page<\/b>.<br \/>\nCorrect: Open your book at\u00a0<b>page six<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Incorrect: He is in\u00a0<b>class ninth.<\/b><br \/>\nCorrect: He is in\u00a0<b>class nine<\/b>.<br \/>\nCorrect: He is in the\u00a0<b>ninth class<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>After a noun we usually use a\u00a0cardinal number\u00a0(e.g. one, two, three, ten etc.) instead of an\u00a0ordinal number. Before a noun we use an ordinal number (e.g. first, second, fifth, tenth etc.)<\/p>\n<p>Incorrect: You are becoming\u00a0<b>young.<\/b><br \/>\nCorrect: You are becoming<b>\u00a0younger.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Incorrect: It is getting\u00a0<b>dark.<\/b><br \/>\nCorrect: It is getting\u00a0<b>darker<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><i>You are becoming young\u00a0<\/i>is of course correct English, but English has a fondness for the use of the\u00a0comparative\u00a0form when change is implied in a sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Incorrect: Of the two routes this is\u00a0<b>the shortest<\/b>.<br \/>\nCorrect: Of the two routes this is\u00a0<b>the shorter<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Incorrect: Of the three solutions this is\u00a0<b>the better<\/b>.<br \/>\nCorrect: Of the three solutions this is\u00a0<b>the best<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>We use the comparative adjective to make a comparison between two people or things. We use the\u00a0superlative adjective\u00a0to make a comparison between more than two people or things.<\/p>\n<p>Incorrect: There is\u00a0<b>a best singer<\/b>\u00a0in my class.<br \/>\nCorrect: There is a\u00a0<b>very good singer\u00a0<\/b>in my class.<\/p>\n<p>When no comparison is implied the\u00a0positive adjective\u00a0should be used.<\/p>\n<p>Incorrect: I have never seen\u00a0<b>a so intelligent girl<\/b>.<br \/>\nCorrect: I have never seen<b>\u00a0so intelligent a girl<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Incorrect: He was\u00a0<b>a so generous man\u00a0<\/b>that he donated all his wealth to charity.<br \/>\nCorrect: He was\u00a0<b>so generous a man<\/b>\u00a0that he donated all his wealth to charity.<\/p>\n<p>The correct structure is\u00a0<i>so + adjective + a\/an + singular\u00a0countable noun.<\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In this lesson we will take a look at some of the most common errors in the use of\u00a0adjectives.
