(<b>NOT\u00a0<\/b>She is a beautiful.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are, however, some exceptions.<\/p>\n<p><b>The + adjective\u00a0<\/b>is often used to talk about certain well known groups of people. The common expressions of this kind are: the blind, the deaf, the rich, the poor, the disabled, the jobless, the young etc.<\/p>\n<ul type=\"square\">\n<li>The Government should pay attention to the problems of\u00a0<b>the poor.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>The disabled\u00a0<\/b>are God&#8217;s special children.<\/li>\n<li>He is collecting money for\u00a0<b>the blind.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Points to be noted<\/h3>\n<p><b>1.<\/b>\u00a0The above expressions are always\u00a0plural:\u00a0<b>the blind\u00a0<\/b>means\u00a0<i>all blind people\u00a0<\/i>and\u00a0<b>the dead\u00a0<\/b>means\u00a0<i>all dead people\u00a0<\/i>or\u00a0<i>the dead people<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><b>2.\u00a0<\/b>However, a few fixed phrases like\u00a0<b>the accused, the deceased, the former\u00a0<\/b>etc., can have a\u00a0singular\u00a0meaning as well.<\/p>\n<ul type=\"square\">\n<li><b>The accused\u00a0<\/b>was sent on bail.<\/li>\n<li><b>The deceased\u00a0<\/b>is survived by his wife and children. (singular)<\/li>\n<li><b>The deceased\u00a0<\/b>include four women and three children. (plural)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>3.\u00a0<\/b>Adjectives\u00a0are not normally used in this way without\u00a0<b>the.\u00a0<\/b>However, adjectives without\u00a0<b>the\u00a0<\/b>can be used after\u00a0possessives, certain quantifiers (many and more), and in paired structures with\u00a0<b>and\u00a0<\/b>or\u00a0<b>or.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul type=\"square\">\n<li><b>Both rich\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0<b>poor\u00a0<\/b>are God&#8217;s children. (<b>NOT\u00a0<\/b>Both the rich and the poor\u2026)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>4.\u00a0<\/b>These expressions\u00a0<b>cannot\u00a0<\/b>be used with a\u00a0possessive\u00a0<b>&#8216;s<\/b>.<\/p>\n<ul type=\"square\">\n<li><b>The problems of the poor\u00a0<\/b>must be properly addressed.
