They can be easily left out. Identifying relative clauses, on the other hand, cannot be easily left out.<\/p>\n<p>Incorrect: I poured him a glass of coffee, he drank at once.<br \/>\nCorrect: I poured him a glass of coffee,\u00a0<b>which<\/b>\u00a0he drank at once.<\/p>\n<p>Incorrect: She went to work with my cousin, she later married.<br \/>\nCorrect: She went to work with my cousin,\u00a0<b>whom<\/b>\u00a0she later married.<\/p>\n<p>The relative pronoun cannot be left out in non-identifying relative clauses.<\/p>\n<p>Incorrect: This is the house\u00a0<b>what<\/b>\u00a0Jack built. Correct: This is the house\u00a0<b>that<\/b>\u00a0Jack built.<\/p>\n<p>Incorrect: The only thing\u00a0<b>what<\/b>\u00a0keeps me awake is coffee. Correct: The only thing\u00a0<b>that<\/b>\u00a0keeps me awake is coffee.<\/p>\n<p><b>What<\/b>\u00a0means \u2018that which\u2019 or \u2018the things which\u2019. It cannot be used as an ordinary relative pronoun after a noun or pronoun.<\/p>\n<p>Incorrect:\u00a0<b>That<\/b>\u00a0cannot be cured must be endured.<br \/>\nCorrect:\u00a0<b>What\u00a0<\/b>cannot be cured must be endured.
