A dependent clause cannot stand on its own. It must be added to an independent clause.<\/p>\n<p>Dependent clauses are introduced by\u00a0subordinating conjunctions. Common examples are: if,\u00a0whether, because,\u00a0as, when, while,\u00a0since, after etc.<\/p>\n<p>The word groups given below are all dependent clauses that cannot stand alone.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When she finished her work.<\/li>\n<li>Because she was tired.<\/li>\n<li>Since they were working on it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is easy to identify dependent clauses. They usually begin with\u00a0conjunctions.<\/p>\n<p>Not all clauses introduced by conjunctions are\u00a0<b>dependent (subordinate) clauses<\/b>. Clauses introduced by\u00a0coordinating conjunctions\u00a0are\u00a0independent (main) clauses. The most common coordinating conjunctions are:\u00a0<b>and, or, but, for, yet, nor, so<\/b>. Although you can begin a sentence with a coordinating conjunction, it is not always considered appropriate.<\/p>\n<h2>Run-on Sentences<\/h2>\n<p><b>A\u00a0run-on sentence<\/b>\u00a0is a very common error. While proofreading your work, read each\u00a0sentence\u00a0to see whether it contains more than one independent clause.<\/p>\n<p>If a sentence contains two or more independent clauses they must be connected with\u00a0<b>a coordinating conjunction<\/b>. Or they must be separated with an appropriate punctuation mark.<\/p>\n<p>Study the example sentence given below.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My boss has asked me to make a presentation about the advantages and disadvantages of outsourcing I don\u2019t know anything about the subject.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The sentence given above contains two<b>\u00a0independent clauses<\/b>\u00a0but they are not connected by a conjunction or separated by a punctuation mark.<\/p>\n<p>It could be rewritten as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My boss has asked me to make a presentation about the advantages and disadvantages of outsourcing\u00a0<b>but<\/b>\u00a0I don\u2019t know anything about the subject.<\/li>\n<li>My boss has asked me to give a presentation about the advantages and disadvantages of outsourcing.\u00a0<b>However<\/b>, I don\u2019t know anything about the subject.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Make sure that each sentence has an independent (or main) clause.
