Study the sentence given below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>He got off the floor and walked away.<\/li><li>He got off the floor. He walked away.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Here we merely connected the two independent clauses with the coordinating conjunction<strong> and<\/strong>. Clauses of this kind are called <strong>coordinate clauses.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More examples are given below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>She arrived in the morning <strong>and<\/strong> started making arrangements for the trip. <\/li><li>They found the boy <strong>but<\/strong> he was almost dead.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When we connect two clauses with a coordinating conjunction, we get a compound sentence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are mainly four types of coordinating conjunctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cumulative conjunctions (and)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They merely add two clauses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>She got the message <strong>and<\/strong> started immediately.<\/li><li>She worked hard <strong>and <\/strong>secured the first rank.<\/li><li>She refused the offer <strong>and<\/strong> later regretted her decision.<\/li><li>She learnt her lessons <strong>and<\/strong> went out to play.<\/li><li>She went on a diet <strong>and <\/strong>lost oodles of weight.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Adversative conjunction (but, still, only, yet)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They connect two contrasting ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>She didn\u2019t come <strong>but <\/strong>I waited patiently.<\/li><li>She had hardly any chances of survival, <strong>yet<\/strong> she didn\u2019t lose hope.<\/li><li>She betrayed my trust, <strong>still<\/strong> I loved her.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Alternative conjunction (or, nor, else)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternative conjunctions express a choice between two alternatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The doctor must arrive soon<strong> or <\/strong>the patient will die.<\/li><li>Run fast <strong>else<\/strong> you will miss the train.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Illative conjunctions (for)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They express an inference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I can\u2019t come tomorrow <strong>for<\/strong> I have an important appointment.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>See also:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/perfectyourenglish.com\/blog\/complex-sentences\/\">Complex sentence<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/perfectyourenglish.com\/blog\/the-compound-complex-sentence\/\">Compound-complex sentence<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A compound sentence consists of two or more clauses of equal rank.
