Note that in exclamations the verb comes after the subject. In questions the verb comes before the subject.<\/p>\n<p>Compare:<\/p>\n<p>How hot is it?<br \/>\nHow hot it is!<\/p>\n<p>Note that in exclamations with\u00a0<b>how\u00a0<\/b>we do not use<b>\u00a0do<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>How I love chocolates! (NOT How do I love chocolates!)<\/p>\n<p>If there is an adjective or adverb, it will come immediately after\u00a0<b>how<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><b>How well\u00a0<\/b>she sings! (NOT How she sings well!)<br \/>\n<b>How beautiful<\/b>\u00a0the sunset is! (NOT How the sunset is beautiful!)<\/p>\n<h3>How, what and why<\/h3>\n<p>These three question words are often confused. Note particularly the common structures with these words.<\/p>\n<p><b>How<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>How are you?<br \/>\nHow do you do it?<br \/>\nHow do you know?<br \/>\nHow old are you?<br \/>\nHow much do you weigh?<br \/>\nHow often do you visit your grandparents?<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>What<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>What do you call this?<br \/>\nWhat is that animal called?<br \/>\nWhat do you think?<br \/>\nWhat did you say?<br \/>\nWhat did you do then?<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Why<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>Why should I do it?<br \/>\nWhy should I like that?<br \/>\nWhy should I go?<br \/>\nWhy should I wait?<\/i><\/p>\n<p>In exclamations\u00a0<b>what\u00a0<\/b>is used before nouns or noun phrases.\u00a0<b>How\u00a0<\/b>is used before adjectives, adverbs and verb phrases.<\/p>\n<p>What a beautiful voice!<br \/>\nHow beautiful!<\/p>\n<h3>How about\u2026? and what about\u2026?<\/h3>\n<p>Both\u00a0<b>how about\u2026?<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>what about\u2026?<\/b>\u00a0can be used to make suggestions.<\/p>\n<p><b>How about<\/b>\u00a0going to the film? OR\u00a0<b>What about\u00a0<\/b>going to the film?<\/p>\n<p><b>What about\u2026?<\/b>\u00a0can be used to bring up points that might have been forgotten.<\/p>\n<p><b>What about\u00a0<\/b>your child? Who will take care of her when you are away?<\/p>\n<h3>How-clauses<\/h3>\n<p>Clauses introduced by\u00a0<b>how\u00a0<\/b>can be used as the objects of verbs like\u00a0<b>ask, tell, wonder<\/b>\u00a0or\u00a0<b>know.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t ask me\u00a0<b>how I did it<\/b>.<br \/>\nTell me\u00a0<b>how the journey was<\/b>.<br \/>\nI wonder\u00a0<b>how she got away<\/b>.<br \/>\nDoes anybody know\u00a0<b>how big the universe is<\/b>?<\/p>\n<p><b>How-clauses<\/b>\u00a0can also be used as subjects.<\/p>\n<p><b>How you divide the property<\/b>\u00a0is your business.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How\u00a0is used to introduce questions or the answers to questions.
