But if you say&nbsp;<i>He seems<\/i>, the sense is incomplete. You have to supply a word like&nbsp;<i>tired&nbsp;<\/i>(or sad, happy, cheerful etc.) to make the sense complete.&nbsp;<b>Seems&nbsp;<\/b>is therefore a verb of incomplete predication. The word (e.g. tired) which completes the meaning of the sentence is called the complement of the verb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Verbs of incomplete predication are also called&nbsp;<b>linking verbs<\/b>&nbsp;because they join the subject and the predicate. Here are the most common linking verbs: be, feel, grow, seem, smell, remain, appear, sound, stay, look, taste, turn, become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>He is a wicked ruler.<\/li><li>He was benevolent.<\/li><li>She seemed upset.<\/li><li>The milk turned sour.<\/li><li>The meat smelled awful.<\/li><li>She appears intelligent.<\/li><li>The sky grew dark.<\/li><li>He looked happy.<\/li><li>Sugar tastes sweet.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Many linking verbs can also be used as action verbs. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The kids\u00a0<b>looked\u00a0<\/b>sad. (Linking verb)<\/li><li>I\u00a0<b>looked\u00a0<\/b>for the dog in the pouring rain. (Action verb)<\/li><li>Honey tastes sweet. (Linking verb)<\/li><li>I tasted the honey. (Action verb)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Helping Verbs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Helping verbs&nbsp;<\/b>are added to another verb to make the meaning clearer. Helping verbs include any form of&nbsp;<b>to be<\/b>. Here are some examples:&nbsp;<b>do, does, did, have, has, had, shall, should, will, would, can, could, may, might, must.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Verb phrases<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Verb phrases&nbsp;<\/b>are made of one main verb and one or more helping verbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>They\u00a0<b>will start\u00a0<\/b>before dawn.<\/li><li>They\u00a0<b>do have<\/b>\u00a0a serious problem.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Look at the sentences given below.
