They are used with other verbs to express actions, events or situations that exist only as conceptions of the mind &#8211; permissions, possibilities, certainty, ability, wishes, obligations etc. They may also express simple futurity.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I can swim.<\/li>\n<li>She will come.<\/li>\n<li>I must go now.<\/li>\n<li>Should I call them?<\/li>\n<li>She might come.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Modal auxiliaries<\/b>\u00a0have three common characteristics.<\/p>\n<p><b>1.\u00a0<\/b>They are never used alone. A principal verb is either present or implied.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u00a0<b>can fly\u00a0<\/b>an aeroplane.<\/li>\n<li>He\u00a0<b>should behave.<\/b><\/li>\n<li>Will you go? Yes, I\u00a0<b>will (go).<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>2.\u00a0<\/b>Modal auxiliaries have no\u00a0<b>\u2013s\u00a0<\/b>in the third person singular.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u00a0<b>can<\/b>\u00a0swim.<\/li>\n<li>She\u00a0<b>can\u00a0<\/b>swim. (<b>NOT\u00a0<\/b>She cans \u2026)<\/li>\n<li>I\u00a0<b>may\u00a0<\/b>pass.<\/li>\n<li>He\u00a0<b>may\u00a0<\/b>pass.<\/li>\n<li>They\u00a0<b>may<\/b>\u00a0pass.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>3.\u00a0<\/b>Modal auxiliaries do not have <a href=\"http:\/\/perfectyourenglish.com\/blog\/infinitive-phrases\/\">infinitives<\/a> (to may, to shall etc.) or <a href=\"http:\/\/perfectyourenglish.com\/blog\/participles\/\">participles<\/a> (maying, shalling, shalled etc.).
