They have different word order.<\/p>\n<h3>Contracted negative question<\/h3>\n<p><b>Word order: auxiliary verb + n\u2019t + subject<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Why\u00a0<b>don\u2019t you\u00a0<\/b>listen to me?<\/li>\n<li><b>Don\u2019t you<\/b>\u00a0understand?<\/li>\n<li><b>Hasn\u2019t she<\/b>\u00a0any friends to help her?<\/li>\n<li><b>Aren\u2019t they\u00a0<\/b>ready?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Uncontracted negative questions<\/h3>\n<p>Uncontracted\u00a0negative\u00a0questions are more formal than contracted negative questions.<\/p>\n<p><b>Word order: auxiliary verb + subject + not<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Why\u00a0<b>do you not\u00a0<\/b>listen to me?<\/li>\n<li><b>Do you not\u00a0<\/b>understand?<\/li>\n<li><b>Has she not<\/b>\u00a0any friends to help her?<\/li>\n<li><b>Are they not<\/b>\u00a0ready?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Contracted negative questions beginning with\u00a0<i>Won\u2019t you \u2026? Wouldn\u2019t you\u2026?<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0<i>Why don\u2019t you \u2026?\u00a0<\/i>are very common in polite requests, invitations, offers, complaints and criticisms.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Wouldn\u2019t you\u00a0<\/b>like a cup of coffee?<\/li>\n<li><b>Why don\u2019t you\u00a0<\/b>come and stay with us?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In a reply to a negative question,\u00a0<b>yes<\/b>\u00a0suggests a positive answer, and\u00a0<b>no<\/b>\u00a0suggests a negative answer.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2018Haven\u2019t you written to her?\u2019 \u2018Yes.\u2019 (= I have written to her.)<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Haven\u2019t you told her about us?\u2019 \u2018No.\u2019 (= I haven\u2019t told her about you.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Negative\u00a0questions are of two kinds: contracted and uncontracted.
