Sometimes determiners and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/perfectyourenglish.com\/blog\/degree-modifiers-with-comparatives-and-superlatives\/\">degree modifiers<\/a>\u00a0are also considered as distinct parts of speech.<\/p>\n<h2>Same word, different parts of speech<\/h2>\n<p>In English, it is possible for a single word to belong to two or more parts of speech. For example, the word<b>\u00a0laugh\u00a0<\/b>is a noun in the sentence\u00a0<i><b>He gave a silly laugh<\/b><\/i>\u00a0but a verb in the sentence\u00a0<i><b>Don\u2019t laugh at me<\/b><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>In the same way, the word\u00a0<b>fast<\/b>\u00a0is an adjective in the sentence\u00a0<i><b>He likes to drive fast cars<\/b><\/i>\u00a0but an adverb in the sentence\u00a0<i><b>He drove fast<\/b><\/i>.<\/p>\n<h2>Identifying parts of speech<\/h2>\n<p>Words belonging to the same part of speech exhibit very similar grammatical properties. Sometimes students find it difficult to classify words according to their parts of speech. But this is not very difficult.
