When two actions in the past have to be referred to,\u00a0<b>the past perfect<\/b>\u00a0is used for the earlier action and\u00a0<b>the simple past\u00a0<\/b>for the later one.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u00a0<b>had seen\u00a0<\/b>him twice before he\u00a0<b>left\u00a0<\/b>for New York.<\/li>\n<li>The train\u00a0<b>had left\u00a0<\/b>before I\u00a0<b>reached\u00a0<\/b>the station.<\/li>\n<li>The patient\u00a0<b>had died\u00a0<\/b>before the doctor\u00a0<b>came.<\/b><\/li>\n<li>She\u00a0<b>had left\u00a0<\/b>before I\u00a0<b>reached\u00a0<\/b>home.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note that we can use\u00a0<b>time conjunctions<\/b>\u00a0(e.g. after, before, as soon as) to talk about two actions or events that happen one after the other. Usually\u00a0<b>the past perfect\u00a0<\/b>is not necessary in these cases, though it can be used.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>After\u00a0<\/b>he (had) finished his exam, he went to London.<\/li>\n<li><b>As soon as<\/b>\u00a0I (had) put the phone down, it rang again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>To talk about unrealized hopes and wishes<\/h3>\n<p><b>The past perfect<\/b>\u00a0can be used to talk about an unrealized hope, wish etc.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u00a0<b>had hoped\u00a0<\/b>that Ann would be a doctor, but she wasn&#8217;t good at science.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>To talk about past events that did not happen<\/h3>\n<p>After\u00a0<b>if, wish<\/b>\u00a0and<b>\u00a0would rather<\/b>, the past perfect can be used to talk about past events that did not happen.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>If<\/b>\u00a0I<b>\u00a0had gone\u00a0<\/b>to university, I\u00a0<b>would have studied\u00a0<\/b>science.<\/li>\n<li>I\u00a0<b>wish\u00a0<\/b>you\u00a0<b>had told\u00a0<\/b>me the truth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Past perfect tense forms Affirmative I had written.
