Follow these rules to create possessive nouns.<\/p>\n

With singular nouns, add an apostrophe (\u2019) and\u00a0s<\/b>.<\/p>\n

girl: girl‘s<\/b>\u00a0manuscript
\nstudent: student‘s\u00a0<\/b>ideas<\/p>\n

With plural nouns ending in\u00a0s<\/b>, add an apostrophe (\u2019) after the\u00a0s<\/b>.<\/p>\n

girls: girls’<\/b>\u00a0manuscript
\nstudents: students’\u00a0<\/b>ideas
\nboys: boys\u2019\u00a0<\/b>school<\/p>\n

With plural nouns not ending in\u00a0s,<\/b>\u00a0add an apostrophe and\u00a0s<\/b>.<\/p>\n

women: women‘s<\/b>\u00a0books
\nmice: mice‘s<\/b>\u00a0tails<\/p>\n

With compound nouns, add an apostrophe and s to the last word.<\/p>\n

sister-in-law: my sister-in-law\u2019s\u00a0<\/b>daughter<\/p>\n

Possessives with of<\/h2>\n

We cannot put a\u00a0possessive\u00a0<\/b>between a noun and a determiner. We can say\u00a0my friend, his friend, John\u2019s friend, a friend\u00a0<\/i>or\u00a0that friend<\/i>. But we can\u2019t say\u00a0a my friend\u00a0<\/i>or\u00a0that John\u2019s friend<\/i>. Instead we use a structure with\u00a0of + possessive.<\/b><\/p>\n

Structure:\u00a0determiner + noun + of + possessive<\/b><\/p>\n

  • He is\u00a0a friend of mine.<\/b><\/li>\n
  • How is\u00a0that brother of yours<\/b>?<\/li>\n
  • He is\u00a0a friend of my father\u2019s.<\/b><\/li>\n
  • He is\u00a0a cousin of John\u2019s.<\/b><\/li>\n
  • Have you heard\u00a0this new idea of the boss\u2019s?<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Note that sometimes we use a noun without the possessive\u00a0\u2019s\u00a0<\/b>after\u00a0of.<\/b><\/p>\n
