A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/perfectyourenglish.com\/blog\/prepositional-phrases\/\">prepositional phrase\u00a0<\/a>is a preposition and its object. A prepositional phrase can be two or three words long, as these examples show:\u00a0<i>on the roof, in the door, under the bed.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>However, prepositional phrases can be much longer, depending on the length of the preposition and number of words that describe the object of the preposition.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is a cat\u00a0<b>on the roof.<\/b><\/li>\n<li>He is fond\u00a0<b>of children.<\/b><\/li>\n<li>She sat\u00a0<b>by the fire.<\/b><\/li>\n<li>The lion and the unicorn fought\u00a0<b>for the crown.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Most English prepositions have several different functions. At the same time, different prepositions can have very similar uses.<\/p>\n<p>When we use <a href=\"http:\/\/perfectyourenglish.com\/blog\/how-to-identify-verbs\/\">verbs<\/a> after prepositions, we use\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/perfectyourenglish.com\/blog\/gerunds-ing-forms\/\">-ing forms<\/a>, not\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/perfectyourenglish.com\/blog\/infinitive-phrases\/\">infinitives<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We are thinking<b>\u00a0of visiting\u00a0<\/b>them. (NOT We are thinking of to visit them.)<\/li>\n<li>He insisted\u00a0<b>on being paid<\/b>\u00a0at once.
