There are four sentence functions in English:&nbsp;<b>declarative, exclamatory, interrogative<\/b>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<b>imperative.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Declarative<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Declarative sentences&nbsp;<\/b>state an idea. They end with a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/perfectyourenglish.com\/blog\/full-stop\/\">full stop<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Susie smokes.<\/li><li>The war is over.<\/li><li>Three students failed to sit the examination.<\/li><li>I am not ready yet.<\/li><li>Gauri dances well.<\/li><li>My mother is a fantastic cook.<\/li><li>Your sister sings beautifully.<\/li><li>We are waiting for the bus.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exclamatory<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Exclamatory sentences&nbsp;<\/b>express strong emotions. They end with an&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/perfectyourenglish.com\/blog\/full-stop-question-mark-exclamation-mark\/\">exclamation mark<\/a>. Examples are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What a lovely day it is!<\/li><li>I can\u2019t believe this!<\/li><li>What a mess this room is!<\/li><li>How beautiful it is!<\/li><li>What an unforgettable experience!<\/li><li>How beautifully you sing!<\/li><li>What a tragedy!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Interrogative<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Interrogative sentences ask a question. They end with a question mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Is Susie drinking tea?<\/li><li>What is Susie drinking?<\/li><li>Who are you?<\/li><li>What are you doing with my camera?<\/li><li>Where have they gone?<\/li><li>What will we do?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Imperative<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><b><a href=\"http:\/\/perfectyourenglish.com\/blog\/imperative\/\">Imperative sentences<\/a>&nbsp;<\/b>give orders or directions. They end with a period or an exclamation mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Wash your hands.<\/li><li>Do your homework!<\/li><li>Sit down and listen!<\/li><li>Leave me alone.<\/li><li>Stop it!<\/li><li>Listen.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>An imperative sentence usually has no expressed subject (though\u00a0<b>you<\/b>\u00a0is understood as its subject).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Worksheet<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Say whether the following sentences are declarative, interrogative, exclamatory or imperative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I was not expecting this.<\/li><li>We have had enough of this nonsense.<\/li><li>Leave it.<\/li><li>Don&#8217;t throw stones at the dogs.<\/li><li>Who was the man standing outside?<\/li><li>Where have they disappeared?<\/li><li>Please open the door.<\/li><li>Don&#8217;t walk on the grass.<\/li><li>My sister works in Canada.<\/li><li>How long have you known them?<\/li><li>What did you do then?<\/li><li>How are we supposed to handle this situation?<\/li><li>What an incredible achievement!<\/li><li>How tiny he is!<\/li><li>Fill in the blanks.<\/li><\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sentences can be classified according to their functions.
