A noun phrase<\/strong> is a group of words that serves the same purpose as a noun. Note that a noun can be the subject or object of a verb. A noun phrase will always have a noun which is the headword<\/strong>. It may also consist of determiners<\/a>, adjectives<\/a>, numbers or quantifiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The poor woman<\/span> struggled to make a living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This noun phrase consists of the article the and the adjective poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Noun phrase: a lot of people; headword: people<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This noun phrase consists of the quantifier \u2018a lot of\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was wearing a lovely blue dress.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Noun phrase: a lovely blue dress; headword: dress<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This noun phrase consists of the article a<\/strong> and the adjectives lovely and blu<\/strong>e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those flowers<\/span> are beautiful. (Noun phrase: those flowers; it consists of the determiner those and the noun flowers)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Note that adjectives, articles, determiners and quantifiers go before the noun. Hence, they are often called pre-modifiers.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A noun phrase may also contain postmodifiers<\/strong>. These are the words that go after the noun. The postmodifier is usually a prepositional phrase, an infinitive phrase or an ing phrase.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man standing over there<\/span> is my uncle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Noun phrase: the man standing over there<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here the noun phrase consists of the ing phrase \u2018standing over there\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Headword: boy<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Premodifiers: that, tall<\/p>\n\n\n\n
