Articles are a kind of <a href=\"https:\/\/perfectyourenglish.com\/blog\/determiners-2\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"73812\">determiners<\/a>. They come at the beginning of nouns or noun phrases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to use articles?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A singular countable noun is always used with an article or another determiner. For example, we say <em>a book, the book, this book, my book<\/em> or <em>any book<\/em>. We do not just say <em>book<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plural nouns cannot be used with <strong>a\/an<\/strong>. Uncountable nouns are not normally used with <strong>a\/an<\/strong>. However, there are some exceptions to this rule. Sometimes, an uncountable noun is treated as a countable noun and in this case, we can use <strong>a\/an<\/strong> with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I would like <strong>a coffee<\/strong>. (Coffee is usually uncountable; however, in this case, we are treating it as a countable noun.)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to use the?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We use<strong> the<\/strong> to talk about a person or thing that is known to both the speaker and the listener.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I have been to <strong>the doctor<\/strong>. (Here the listener knows which doctor the speaker is talking about.)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to use a\/an?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We use <strong>a\/an<\/strong> to talk about a person or thing when the listener does not know which person or thing we are talking about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I went to <strong>a dentist <\/strong>yesterday and he said that I should change my toothbrush.
