They are a kind of determiners. They go before nouns and noun phrases. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The article <strong>a\/an<\/strong> is used when we are talking about a person or thing for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I met <strong>a<\/strong> foreigner in the store.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The article <strong>the<\/strong> is used in subsequent references to that person \/ thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>The foreigner<\/strong> was looking for a map of the town.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Always use an article with a singular countable noun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>She has adopted<strong> a cat<\/strong>. (NOT She has adopted cat.)<\/li><li>He is <strong>a friend<\/strong> of mine. (NOT He is friend of mine.)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Plural and uncountable nouns are usually used without articles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Cats make great pets. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, these nouns also take articles with them when we are talking about particular people or things. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The cats that my neighbour keeps are quite affectionate. (Particular cats)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Worksheet 1<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Fill in the blanks with an appropriate article. In some cases, no article is used. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1.
