This requires an understanding of the conjunctions used to introduce dependent and independent clauses.<\/p>\n<p>Dependent clauses are introduced by subordinating conjunctions like <strong>when, before, after, because, since, as, if, unless, whether, till, until<\/strong> etc.<\/p>\n<p>Independent or main clauses are usually introduced by the coordinating conjunctions: <strong>and, or, but, so, yet, no, for<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An example is given below.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>If you send in a written request<\/strong>, we will look into the matter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As you can see, this is a complex sentence. It has one dependent clause (if you send in a written request) and one independent clause (we will look into the matter).<\/p>\n<p>The dependent clause is introduced by the subordinating conjunction <strong>\u2018if<\/strong>\u2019. In order to change this complex sentence into a compound sentence, we need to remove that subordinating conjunction and connect the two clauses with a coordinating conjunction.<\/p>\n<p>Study the example given below.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Send in a written request <strong>and<\/strong> we will look into the matter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The sentence given above has two independent clauses connected by the coordinating conjunction <strong>and.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another example is given below.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Though antibiotics are effective against a number of diseases<\/strong>, they should be taken only after consulting your doctor. (Complex sentence)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To change this complex sentence into a compound sentence, you need to remove that subordinating conjunction \u2018though\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Now connect the two clauses with a coordinating conjunction that expresses the same idea.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Antibiotics are effective against a number of diseases, <strong>but<\/strong> they should be taken only after consulting your doctor. (Compound)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One more example is given below.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>As we couldn\u2019t catch the last bus<\/strong>, we had to walk all the way home.
