Subject – Verb Agreement Exercise For Class 6 CBSE English

The verb has to agree with the subject in number and person. That means if the subject is singular, the verb should be singular. Likewise, if the subject is plural, the verb should be plural. Watch this video for easy explanations of subject-verb agreement rules.

When the subject is a pronoun, the verb has to agree with it in person as well. English pronouns belong to three categories – first person, second person and third person.

First person pronouns – I and we
Second person pronoun – you
Third person pronoun – he, she, it, they

Here are the basic rules of subject-verb agreement.

In the simple present tense, when the subject is a singular noun or pronoun, the verb takes the marker –s.

  • My son writes with his left hand. (Here the subject my son is a singular noun and hence the verb write becomes writes.)
  • They live in a big house. (Here the subject is the plural pronoun they and hence the verb does not take the marker –s)
  • My parents live in Kerala.
  • My sister also lives in Kerala.
  • Birds live in nests.
  • A bird lives in that hole.

Fill in the blanks with a verb that agrees with the subject in the following sentences.
