Simple present and simple past tense worksheet

Read the following sentences.

  • I get up at 6.30.
  • I usually have my breakfast at 8.30.
  • I go for a walk every morning.
  • My father usually drinks tea in the morning.
  • I drink a glass of milk before I go to bed.
  • My brother writes with his left hand.

The sentences given above are in the simple present tense. We use the simple present tense to talk about our habits or routines.

When to use the simple present tense

Use the simple present tense to talk about customs, habits, routines and general facts.

Some words that indicate simple present tense are: every day, every Sunday, daily, usually, never, always. Sentences that have these words will most probably be in the simple present tense.

  • She goes to the church every Sunday.
  • My mother goes to the temple every day.
  • She goes to the market daily.
  • I usually get up at 6 am.
  • She never leaves home without her cell phone.
  • He always says his prayers before eating his meals.

As you can see in all of these sentences, we are talking about habits or customs.

Now read the following sentences.

  • She died in June.
  • I visited my grandmother yesterday.
  • India won just two medals in Rio Olympics.
  • We took a vacation last summer.
  • I talked to the principal yesterday.

The sentences given above are in the simple past tense. We use the simple past tense to talk about actions that happened in the past.

When to use the simple past tense

Use the simple past tense with time expressions like yesterday, last week, last year, last Friday, in 2010 etc.
