It is argued that developed countries should give support to developing / underdeveloped countries in the event of natural disasters. I totally agree with this idea because it is beneficial to the economic development of all the nations involved and the general health and wellbeing of their people.
The assistance to needy countries may help to minimize the dire impact a natural disaster has on the local and global economy. Many poor nations such as Indonesia and Thailand are the factories of the world due to their low labour cost. If their economy is severely affected by an earthquake or a tornado, it is detrimental to the economic growth of other nations as well. For example, in 2004, Indonesia had to cope with the worst tsunami in history. Many wealthy nations gave a helping hand to rebuild houses and factories. They helped Indonesia recover from the disaster and at the same time protected the business interests of their companies operating in the country.
Moreover, by offering medical and other forms of assistance to disaster hit nations, wealthy nations can protect world health. History tells us that epidemics such as plague typically break out in the aftermath of natural disasters like floods. If the prosperous countries support the local hospitals and offer medical supplies, it will help to contain the infections and prevent the transmission of diseases from one country to another country. For example, many European countries, such as the United Kingdom and France send professional medical teams to Africa to fight Ebola during the drought season and they have so far managed to prevent Ebola outbreaks in other countries.
To conclude, rich countries should provide humanitarian assistance to poor countries during natural calamities because it is beneficial to the economic growth of both countries. At the same time, it also prevents local outbreak of infections from becoming global health scares.
