Band 9 essay sample
Some people argue that the government should ban vehicles that consume fossil fuels and encourage people to buy electric cars instead. I disagree with this view because automobiles that run on petrol and diesel are more economical. Also, they are available in a wide range of models to meet various needs. Electric car technology, on the other hand, has only started developing.
Petrol cars are the first choice of budget-conscious buyers. They are cheaper than electric cars. They have been available for over a century now and companies have mastered various techniques to manufacture them at lower costs. Consequently, they are affordable and there is a wide range to choose from. Also, over the years these cars have become fuel efficient. Hence, although fuel is expensive, in the long term these cars cost less to run.
By contrast, the electric car technology is still in the nascent stages. Manufacturers are yet to find a way to sell these cars at affordable prices. It is true that these cars are eco-friendly but the upfront cost is too high for a middle class family to afford them. Also, these cars have batteries that need to be replaced every five years or so. In fact, the battery has to be replaced even if the mileage is not particularly high. So, a petrol car is much more economical for a family that travels less than 10,000 miles a year.
Also, it is impossible to ban all vehicles running on petrol or diesel. These vehicles cater to all needs and some of them are irreplaceable at the moment. Cars serve several purposes. They are used not only for daily commuting and commercial transportation but also in sports and entertainment. Right now in the sports car segment there are no electric models that can compete with a petrol model. All of these are factors that limit the utility and popularity of electric cars. Of course, in the future the technology will grow and then electric cars too will become affordable. Until then, however, any attempt to ban petrol cars will have negative consequences.
To conclude, it is true that electric cars are good for the environment. However, they are still too expensive for middle class families. Hence, until their technology fully develops and they become more affordable and versatile, it is foolish to ban petrol cars.
