The simple present tense has several uses.

To talk about general truths

  • Magnets attract iron.
  • Oil floats on water.
  • Water boils at 100 degree Celsius.

To talk about habits

  • He watches a lot of movies.
  • He spends much of him in the malls.
  • I do not get up early in the morning.
  • She keeps her room neat and tidy.
  • I enjoy teaching young kids.

To talk about permanent states and situations

  • A castle stands on the hill.
  • She works at a bank.
  • Susie lives with her grandparents.

In proverbs and sayings

  • A stich in time saves nine.
  • A rolling stone gathers no mosses.
  • A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

To talk about fixed future events

  • The next terms begins on 20th July.
  • The train departs at 6.30.

To refer to the future in subordinate time clauses

  • I will call you when I am ready.
  • I will wait until you come back.

The simple present tense is commonly used with the following expressions.

Always, generally, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, seldom, never, whenever, nowadays, every now and then, most of the time, much of the time

  • I always get up early.
  • He is generally a nice guy.
  • I usually do not stay up late.
  • He often visits us.
  • I sometimes go for a walk in the woods.
  • She seldom goes out.
  • She spends most of her time in the library.
  • Whenever possible, I volunteer at a local orphanage.
  • Every now and then, she takes a break from her hectic schedule.
