Subject Verb Agreement Worksheet for Class 6

English verbs have singular and plural forms. When the subject is singular, it should be followed by a singular verb. Plural subjects are used with plural verbs. This is the basic rule of subject verb agreement.

The auxiliaries is, was, does and has are used with singular subjects. The auxiliaries are, were, have and do are used with plural subjects.

In the simple present tense, when the subject is singular, the verb takes the marker -s. Sometimes, we add -es to the verb to make it singular.

  • My sister teaches English at a school.

When we connect two singular nouns with ‘and’, the verb should be plural.

  • My sister and I go to the same school.

When we connect two singular nouns with ‘or’, the verb should be singular.

  • Rahul or Ravi has to do this. (NOT Rahul or Ravi have to do this.)

When we connect two nouns with as well as or along with, the verb agrees with the former noun.

  • Ravi as well as his brother speaks English. (Here the singular verb speaks agrees with the singular subject Ravi.)
  • The cat along with her kittens is sleeping under the tree. (Here the singular verb is agrees with the singular subject cat.)

When we connect two nouns with either/or or neither/nor, the verb agrees with the noun/pronoun following or/nor.

  • Either he or you have to go. (Here the verb have agrees with the pronoun you.)
  • Either you or I am mistaken. (Here the verb am agrees with the pronoun I.)
