Adjective Or Adverb
An adjective is a word used to describe a noun. It gives us more information about the noun. An adverb is a word used to modify a verb. It gives us more information about the time, manner, place or frequency of the action performed by the subject.
Study the examples given below.
- She is a good singer. (Here the adjective good modifies the noun singer.)
- She sings well. (Here the adverb well modifies the verb sings.) (NOT She sings good.)
Some words can be used both as adjectives and adverbs. Examples are: fast and high.
- He is a fast bowler. (Here the adjective fast modifies the noun bowler.)
- A fast bowler bowls fast. (Here the adverb fast modifies the verb bowls.)
- High heels are not really good for your spine. (Here the adjective high modifies the noun heels.)
- High mountains surround the village. (Here the adjective high modifies the noun mountains.)
- He threw the ball high. (Here the adverb high modifies the verb threw.)
- The birds flew high in the sky. (Here the adverb high modifies the verb flew)
