Using so that

The conjunction so that shows purpose. When we connect two clauses using so that, we use the modals will, can, may, would, could or might in the clause following so that.

If the main clause is in the present tense, use will, may or can in the so that-clause.

  • She works hard. She wants to succeed.
  • She works hard so that she can succeed.

If the main clause is in the past tense, use would, might or could in the so that-clause.

  • I started early. I wanted to reach office on time.
  • I started early so that I would reach office on time.
