Coordinating Conjunctions Worksheet For Class 6

A coordinating conjunction connects two clauses of equal rank. Common coordinating conjunctions are: and, but, or, for, nor, yet, so etc.

Note that when we connect two clauses using a coordinating conjunction, we get a compound sentence.

Correct use of coordinating conjunctions

The coordinating conjunction so shows effect.

  • I was tired so I went to bed.

The coordinating conjunction for is similar to because. It shows inference. Note that for is more formal than because.

  • We cut our trip short for we had run out of money. (Formal)
  • We cut our trip short because we had run out of money. (Informal and more natural)

The conjunctions but and yet have similar use. Yet is more formal than but. Always use a comma before yet.

  • She is rich, yet she leads a simple life. (formal)
  • She is rich but she leads a simple life. (Less formal)
