Had Better | Grammar Exercise

Had better is used to give strong advice.

Note that had better refers to the present or future. It is followed by an infinitive without to.

You had better listen to me. (NOT You have better listen to me.) (NOT You had better to listen to me.)

Rewrite the following sentences using had better.

1. I would advise you to book the tickets now.

2. I don’t think you should buy a new car now.

3. I would advise you to consult a doctor.

4. I don’t think you should depend on him.

5. It is better for you not to borrow from him.

6. It is better for you to stop quarrelling with her.

7. You should lock the door.

8. I think you should accept that offer.

9. It is advisable for you to seek expert opinion.

10. It is better for you to invest your money in some profitable business.

11. I would advise you to take an umbrella.

12. I would advise you to stop smoking.
