In Many Cities, Planners Tend To Arrange Shops, Schools, Offices And Homes In Specific Areas

planners tend to arrange shops

Band 9 IELTS essay sample

In many cities, there are designated areas for commercial stores, educational institutions and residential buildings. In my opinion, there are more disadvantages than advantages to this practice.

Of course, this practice of creating separate residential or educational hubs has its benefits. For example, it lends a specific character to that area. If all schools and colleges are close to one another in a particular area, it will eventually become an educational hub that attracts both students and teachers from even faraway places. Likewise, when there are several shops or restaurants in one area, customers can easily shop around. So, obviously, there are benefits.

Even so, in my opinion, the disadvantages of this practice outweigh the advantages. In many cities, shops are now a long way away from homes. Consequently, consumers have to travel to buy their essentials. This is not exactly a problem if they do a little bit of planning and do the shopping once a week or so. However, sometimes, they may still run out of things at the most inopportune moments and then there are no shops nearby to buy what they want. This causes a lot of inconvenience. In the same way, when there are no schools near homes, it is difficult for young children. Oftentimes, they have to travel several miles to reach their school. Hence, I believe that towns should be planned in such a way that people have access to all the necessities and amenities in their neighbourhood itself. There is no harm in creating separate hubs for offices or commercial establishments; however, there should still be some offices, schools and shops near residential spaces. After all, making life hassle-free should be the ultimate objective of all town planning.

In short, there are certainly some advantages to creating separate spaces for homes, offices and shops. However, if they are separated from one another by a long distance, this kind of town planning will only cause inconvenience to people.

Why is this a band 9 essay?

It addresses all aspects of the task. The writer says that there are more disadvantages than advantages to the given development. The body paragraphs clearly substantiate that view. The writer does mention some benefits. However, they are presented in such a way that the disadvantages easily overshadow them.

There are hardly any grammar mistakes in this essay. The lexical resources seem adequate and the essay sounds coherent.
