2. In answer to the second question, whose advice did the people say would be important to the king?

People gave different answers. While some said that Councillors were the most important people to advise the king, others insisted that he needed priests the most. Some others said that doctors were the most important and there were also some who said that soldiers were more important than anybody else.

6. (i) Who was the bearded man?
(ii) Why did he ask for the king’s forgiveness?

The bearded man was an enemy of the king who had sworn revenge on the king because the king had put his brother to death and seized his property.

He asked for the king’s forgiveness because he had come there with the objective of killing the king on his way home. However, it was the king who saved his life.

7. The king forgave the bearded man. What did he do to show his forgiveness?

To show his forgiveness, the king said that he would send his servants and his own doctor to look after the man. The king also promised to give him his land back.

8. What were the hermit’s answers to the three questions? Write each answer separately. Which answer do you like most, and why?

The hermit’s answer to the first question was that the most important time to do something was ‘now’. It was important because it is the only time we have any power to act.

The most important person whom the king should listen to was the person he was with at any particular point because nobody knows what will happen in future and whether we will meet anyone else.

The most important thing in life is to do good to the man we are with at any point of time because doing good to others is the very purpose of our existence here.
