Since vs. For | Class 5 English Grammar Worksheet

This grammar lesson explains the use of since or for. There is also a worksheet to test your understanding of rules regarding the use of since and for. 

Read the following sentences.

  • Raju has been watching TV for 2 hours.
  • I have been doing my homework since morning.

Since and for are time adverbs. There is a difference between them. We use for to indicate the duration – for 2 hours, for months, for ages, for centuries etc.

Since shows the point at which an action or situation began – since morning, since yesterday, since July, since Monday, since my school days etc.

Note that since and for are usually used with the present perfect and present perfect continuous tenses.

  • We have lived in Delhi for 15 years. OR We have been living in Delhi for 15 years.
  • We have lived in Delhi since 2005. OR We have been living in Delhi since 2005.
