Transitive and Intransitive Verbs Worksheet for Class 6

English verbs can be transitive or intransitive. A transitive verb takes an object. Examples are given below.

  • I like animals. (Here the noun animals is the object of the verb like. Hence, like is a transitive verb.)
  • All mothers love their children. (Here the noun children is the object of the verb love. Hence, love is a transitive verb.)

Some verbs cannot have an object. They are called intransitive verbs. Examples of such verbs are: sleep, sit, smile and laugh.

  • He is sleeping. (No object)
  • Why are you laughing? (No object)
  • He sat on the bench. (No object)

Most verbs can be used transitively and intransitively. That means sometimes they take objects, and sometimes they do not take objects.

  • She moved the books. (Here moved is a transitive verb because it has an object – the books)
  • The curtain moved in the wind. (Here moved is intransitive because it does not an object.)
