What Is a Sentence?
A sentence is a group of words that makes complete sense. The simplest sentence has a subject and a finite verb. Examples are given below.
- Wind blows.
- Fire burns.
- Birds fly.
Imperative sentences do not have an expressed subject.
- Come here.
- Listen.
- Take care.
A sentence is different from a clause in some ways. First, a sentence can always stand alone. It makes complete sense. A dependent / subordinate clause, on the other hand, cannot stand alone despite having a subject and a finite verb of its own.
