Verbal Phrases
A verbal is a verb form used as another part of speech. There are three types of verbals: participles, gerunds, and infinitives. Each type has a different function in a sentence:
Participles function as adjectives.
- It was a boring lecture.(Here the participle boring acts as an adjective modifying the noun lecture.)
- He was a cunning guy. (Here the participle cunning acts as an adjective modifying the noun guy.)
- Walking is a good exercise. (Here the gerund walking acts as the subject of the verb is.)
- Reading makes us more creative. (Here the gerund reading acts as the subject of the verb makes.)
