The runners were taken to the starting point. The runners took their positions. Sir blew the whistle. One student of our school ran fast and came first. Notes

The past continuous is used to talk about an action or situation that was going on at a particular point of time in the past.

  • The children were gathering.
  • The child was playing in the garden.
  • I was reading a novel.

The simple past is used to talk about finished events in the past.

  • One student from our school came first.

We use the passive verb form when the action is performed by someone other than the subject.

The children were taken to the stadium. (Here the children do not do anything. They were taken by the teachers to the stadium. That means the teachers took them to the stadium.)
