Possessive Pronouns And Possessive Adjectives | Grammar Exercise for Classes 5 and 6

Possessive pronouns are forms like mine, yours, ours, his, hers and theirs.

  • This watch is mine.
  • That comb is hers.
  • This computer is his. Where is yours?
  • That house is ours. It is bigger than theirs.

Possessive pronouns can stand alone. They are not followed by nouns. Before a noun we use possessive adjectives. They are forms like my, your, our, their, his, her and its. Note that ‘his’ can be a possessive pronoun or a possessive adjective. It is a possessive adjective when it is followed by a noun.

  • This bag is his. (Here his is used as a possessive pronoun.)
  • This is his bag. (Here his is used as a possessive adjective.)

Possessive pronouns also say who something belongs to, but they replace the noun. So we use them alone. In this case, we don’t use ‘its’. In English, the possessive pronouns are: mine, yours, his, hers, ours and theirs.

  3. I want the definition of possessive adjective
